Ana Muniz

Assistant Professor of Criminology, Law and Society, UC Irvine

Ana Muñiz is an Assistant Professor of Criminology, Law and Society at UC Irvine. Her work traces racial criminalization through institutional ethnographic methods with an emphasis on gang labeling, state violence, and citizenship status. After attaining her PhD in Sociology from UCLA, she co-founded the REALsearch Center at the Youth Justice Coalition, a youth action research project with formerly incarcerated youth in South Los Angeles, California. Dr. Muñiz has also developed research justice models with undocumented youth. She is a former Jacob K. Javits Fellow and Soros Justice Fellow at the Open Society Foundations. Recent publications include the book, Police, Power, and the Production of Racial Boundaries from Rutgers University Press.
